Kayak Africa Island Lodges

On the southern shores of the lake are the islands of Domwe and Mumbo. Kayak Africa, were granted a special concession to build two beautifully rustic tented camps on the islands. Adhering to the strictest principles of eco-architecture, these small intimate dwellings are constructed entirely of timber, thatch and canvas. There are only 5 double tents on each island so there are no more than 10 guests in the camps at any given time. Each camp is laid out among the huge boulders on the waters edge, providing uninterrupted views across the lake from the comfort of your personal hammock.

There are only 5 tented chalets on each island.
Each chalet is built from canvas and thatch on a wooden deck perched among the rocks on the waters edge. Whether you’re lying in bed or relaxing on your private deck, you have marvellous uninterrupted views across the lake. At the front of each chalet are a sitting areas, complete with table and chairs and private hammock.

· The chalets can be configured as twins or double ‘rooms’.
· The bathroom facilities are a short walk from each tent.
· Don’t expect a satellite TV or HiFi in your room! This is paradise and the only sounds you’ll hear are
..the gentle lapping of the lake on the rocks below your tent and the birds in the trees.

Given the nature of these camps you aren’t going to find the usual facilities you might expect in a hotel. There is no electricity and all chalets and walkways are lit by hurricane lamps in the evening. The camp staff are on hand to assist with any queries guests may have, and the resident manager to ensure that all guests enjoy their stay to the maximum.

There is no formal entertainment programme, and who would want one in a settling like this? However, more often than not the guests tend to congregate around in the dinning area and share travel stories, play board games or indulge in a little stargazing.

In keeping with the character of eco-architecture, each camp has a central dinning area, which consists of scattered tables and chairs, an open kitchen and bar, and the sand underfoot. The meals are simple but scrumptious affairs all served in a relaxed and informal manner by the camp staff. Soft drinks, teas and coffee are on offer throughout the day.

The IslandsOnly packages are all inclusive. In other words all meals and cold drinks are included in the rate.

There are no programmes designed specifically for children, however we can think of no better place to enjoy and relaxing family holiday with the older kids.

Recent clients of ours, a honeymoon couple from Johannesburg, described the camps as pure paradise! This reaction sums up the experience of staying on Domwe and Mumbo. Besides the diving, snorkelling, kayaking and odd stroll around the island there is very little to do except relax, unwind and allow your hosts to pamper you with wonderful food and hospitality that is uniquely Malawian.
