Kaya Mawa Lodge

Kaya Mawa Lodge is situated at the head of a crescent-shaped bay, surrounded by mango trees and baobabs. The Tonga translation of ‘kaya mawa’ is “maybe tomorrow”, and that fairly accurately describes the relaxed atmosphere at the lodge. The ambience is further enhanced by the use of the beautiful natural surroundings of beach, rock, island and water to create
a unique wilderness experience. Kaya Mawa Lodge consists of ten stone and teak-framed thatched cottages set into a granite headland. One of these is
a honeymoon house tucked away on its own private island.

Kaya Mawa Lodge is located on a sandy beach bordered by two rocky promontories on the southern tip of Likoma Island in the north east of Lake Malawi, not far from the Mozambique coast.

Kaya Mawa Lodge consists of 10 stone and teak-framed thatched cottages.
· Each cottage faces the lake and has an enormous (7x6ft) mahogany four-poster bed, a shower, a
..sunken stone bathtub and a loo with a view.
· All the cottages have private terraces with direct access to the water, and some can only be reached
..by walkways built over the lake.
· The main lodge is situated high on a rocky promontory overlooking the lake.
· Three cottages are located on the lower western side of the promontory.
· Another two cottages are situated on the long sweeping beach below and to the west of the main
..promontory.
· At the far end of the beach a good 10-minute walk from the main lodge and set high on the rocks
..overlooking the bay are another two cottages.
· There are two cottages on their own rocky outcrops to the east of the main lodge.
· Finally the honeymoon house is built on its own island 50 metres out into the lake, and is accessed
..by boat or by swimming.
· Each room has a raised four-poster mahogany bed, sunken bath, shower and loo, fans, soaps
..and shampoos, outside sitting area and supply of insect repellent.

The main activity at Kaya Mawa is total relaxation. However, there are more active options available for guests who wish to keep busy. These include:

· Walking or biking around the island
· Swimming and snorkelling
· Scuba Diving Courses
· Motorized watersports include waterskiing, tube
..riding and wake snaking.
· Fishing trips.
· Sailing Safaris are offered aboard a small wooden
..skip for journeys around the island.
· Excursions to the nearby Mozambique lakeshore
..are offered by motor or sailing boat.

A local traditional band may entertain guests in the evenings, but this is generally not a planned event.

Meals are served in the dining room at the main lodge with wonderful views of the lake.

Breakfast is usually between 07h00and 08h00 and comprises fruits, cereals, juices, tea, coffee and Full English with choice of eggs.

Lunch is served between 12h30 and 13h30, and usually consists of light meals with fresh salads, quiches and fruit, etc.

Dinners are delicious 3 course affairs and are usually served around 20h00.

However, this is Malawi so everything is flexible, including the food. Meal times are therefore set around the day’s activities and not the other way around.

Kaya Mawa is probably not an ideal place for young children under the age of 12. Older children will enjoy the many activities on offer and the many opportunities to explore the island, be that by foot or bicycle.

Kaya Mawa Lodge is an intimate and ruggedly luxurious hideaway in the ‘Warm Heart of Africa’. Much of this is a result of the beautiful setting, clever design and excellent staff that work tirelessly to create an atmosphere of peaceful elegance. A wonderful place for a romantic holiday!
