Chapwani Island Lodge

The Lodge is nestled in coconut palms and baobabs on a beautiful golden strip of beach. The island is less than a kilometre long and not more than a hundred metres wide. At low tide you can walk around the entire island, exploring the wave-lashed coves and peepholes in the fossilised coral.

The Island is situated just over a mile from the coast to the North West of Stone Town. It can be reached comfortably within 15 minutes from Stone Town by boat.

The bungalows are nestled in-between the baobab, coconut palm and mangrove trees growing along the beachfront. There are five semi-detached, thatched bungalows set right on the beach, offering a total of 10 rooms.

The rooms are very simply furnished with Zanzibari décor. Each one has a four-poster bed with mosquito net, ceiling fan and a small Zanzibari writing desk. The en-suite bathrooms are attractive but unusual and consist of an oval-shaped sunken bath with a hand shower.

Each room has a veranda, which you share with your neighbour. You can take your sun loungers onto the beach and find a secluded spot to sunbathe.

All meals are served in the open-plan restaurant area where you can gaze out to sea as the fishing dhows glide by. Swahili chefs prepare delicious three-course set meals which are distinctly Italian (the influence of the Italian owners) in flavour. The fare is superb and often includes freshly caught fish, crayfish, prawns and other tasty treats.

The bar is a relaxed place to gather in the evenings for sundowners. It stocks a good selection of South African wines, liquor and soft drinks.

Chapwani does allow children of any age however we recommend that families with younger children look at another hotel option.

Chapwani Island is an ideal spot for a romantic holiday or honeymoon! The remote location, elegant décor and wonderful service make this hard to beat.
