Ras Nungwi

The hotel was one of the first to be established in Zanzibar after the government realised the potential for tourism. As a result of this they erected the hotel on one of the best sites on the island - the tip of the Nungwi coastline. Here the hotel overlooks a sparkling expanse of iridescent Indian Ocean. All chalets are positioned to maximise the panoramic sea views and cool island breezes. The hotel, built with natural materials such as palm thatch and fossilized coral limestone, blends harmoniously into the landscape.

Ras Nungwi is situated on the north eastern side of the Nungwi peninsula, just less than 2km from the lighthouse on the northern tip of Zanzibar. From Stonetown it is an hour and a half drive.

The rooms are tastefully decorated in a harmonious combination of ethnic and modern styles. Four-poster beds with cheerful blue bedspreads, handcrafted wooden furniture, reed matting and local fabrics have been used to create a comfortable beach hideaway. The Zanzibarian chef prepares wonderful traditional meals using sauces made with island spices and coconut. It may be fresh line fish one night and curried calamari the next. You can wash this down with a selection of fine South African wines. Meals vary between buffet, barbeque and set menus.

There’s a wide choice of fruit and pastry for breakfast. Lunch is kept light and tasty.

Although Ras Nungwi allows children of all ages they do not specifically cater for youngsters. There are better options on the island for family holidays.
