Welcome to the spice isles of Zanzibar! Contrary to the general perception Zanzibar is more than just one island. It is an archipelago of islands located about 40km off the east coast of Tanzania, Africa, made up of two larger islands and a number of smaller neighbouring ones. The largest of the islands is Unguja, more commonly referred to as Zanzibar Island. Pemba Island is a little smaller and located to the northeast of Zanzibar Island. |

Zanzibar is steeped in history as old as Africa itself! Its location off the east coast of Africa made it an ideal crossroads and victual station for Arab and Asian traders, European explorers and settlers, pirates and bandits, kings and pharaohs and everyone else in between. To get a sense of this history one has to visit Stone Town, the old quarter of Zanzibar Town (or City, if you prefer!) and one of the oldest settlements in East Africa. The town is a treasure trove of ancient buildings, narrow streets, colourful people and wonderful scents of spices. |
